About Some of the Materials Used
Fraser Fir – is an evergreen native to our area mountains above 3000 feet. It has become North Carolina’s signature Christmas tree crop.
White Pine - is a beautiful native pine with pretty needles that aggressively colonizes old fields- hence the nickname “Old Field Pine.”
Chamaecyparis-(kam-e-sip’a-ris) – is a specimen evergreen tree with fern-like branchlets, golden yellow sprays changing to green towards inner tree.
Bittersweet – is a hardy, invasive Asian vine with sprays of bright red berries surrounded by yellow-orange capsules.
Multi-flora Rose Hips – harvested from the aggressive Japanese native that was introduced as an animal friendly hedgerow. Deep red berries produced on a loose cone that may persist a year after harvesting.
Privet Berries – from the Japanese shrub that is now a common sight throughout the Southeast. Lustrous deep blue berries are borne along pyramidal panicles.
Coral Berries – (snowberries) are harvested from the native spreading shrub often found around old home sites in the area. Berries are a deep pink that persist through winter.
